Jazz Live in Europe: Tommy Flanagan at Jazz Baltica 1999

Nine years ago, november 16, in New York died at 71 years the pianist Tommy Flanagan.

He wasn't a well known star, was only a second line man but was a brilliant, interesting musician with intense personality who has been involved in some of the most important recording sessions of the post-bop era, and is also best known as pianist and music director for Ella Fitzgerald.

In the following concert given during Jazz Baltica Festival in Salzau (Germany) in june 1999 we can appreciate all his qualities in solo, in trio and with two important guests: the tenorsaxophonist Johnny Griffin and the vibraphonist Bobby Hutchinson.

Rare Jazz Live: Oscar Peterson in Italy 1966

In the exterminated discography of Oscar Peterson I have not found any recording made in Italy, also if he was here many times for concerts and festivals, and, thanks God, I've listen to him.
In these days I have found seven tracks recorded the march 26, 1966 during his exibition at the "Festival del Jazz di Sanremo".

photo of that evening by courtesy of Roberto Polillo

That Festival born in 1956 was for ten years the most important italian jazz festival.
These tracks are very rare and you can find them here. (new link)

Jazz Live in Europe: Count Basie & Friends in Montreux 1977

The following video made on July 14 shows a part of the Jam Session directed by Count Basie. The beginning set in trio with Ray Brown (bs) and Jimmie Smith (drm), named Trio Blues, is a particular event because, according to Norman Granz, was the first time that Basie as ever done a trio number in a concert.

Jazz Live in Europe: Ahmad Jamal Live in Zurich (2000)

Ahmad Jamal (b.1930) is one of my favorite jazz pianist, a living legend. For years he played only in trio and only after the begining of the '80s he began to include in his group George Coleman (b.1935) the well known saxophonist, composer and bandleader of Memphis, Tennessee, with which made also different tournée in Europe.
This video shot them in Zurich (Switzerland) during the Jaznojazz Festival on October 26th, 2000 playing the popular standard of Young & Washington: My Foolish Heart with James Cammack (bs) and Idris Muhammad (drm)

Jazz Live in Europe: Nina Simone At Montreux Jazz Festival 1976

The Montreux Jazz Festival in Swizerland is one of the most important jazz festivals in Europe.

The great jazz vocalist Nina Simone (1933-2003) in the years went there four times (1968, 1976, 1987, 1990).

The Concert of 1976 is considered the best one, her performance was incredible, exciting, riveting. She doesn't only sing, but also has an amusing interaction with the audience, as you can see in these two moments of the concert.

This first song is a spectacular interpretation of Feelings the famous song written in 1956 by Loulou Gaste (originally in french: Pour Toi)

The second Stars is quite a show with personal considerations on different artists.

Finally enjoy this particular break in which Nina is ironically fighting with the microphone.

Sanremo is a little town very famous in Europe for her flowers production, for her casino and for another festival, that of Italian Song, this year at his 60th edition.
The italian jazz festival was important also in Europe, because was the first european event of this kind, organized in continuous form, with the presence of many important artists from Duke Ellington to Oscar Peterson, from Ella Fitzgerald to Sidney Bechet, Max Roach, Cannnonball Adderley, Bud Powell and so on.

Miles Davis at Warsaw Jazz Jamboree 1983

Following with the Warsaw Jamboree Jazz Festival

during the Cold War, the most important event in those years for polish jazz lovers was the exhibition of Miles Davis Group, at Sala Kongresowa the 15th of April 1983 with:

John Scofield: guitar
Bill Evans: sax
Darryl Jones: bass
Al Foster: drums
Mino Cinelu: percussion
Robert Irving III: synthesizer

Here you can see the beginning of the concert.

This exhibition was also a very exciting experience for Miles who spoke of it in his Autobiography:

«I remember one date in particular in Warsaw, Poland. We didn't even have to go through customs; they just waved us on through. Everybody was wearing "We Want Miles" buttons. The leader of the Soviet Union, Yuri Andropov, sent his personal limousine (or one just like it) to take me everywhere I wanted to go while I was in Warsaw. They told me that he loved my music and thought that I was one of the greatest musicians of all time. They also told me that he had wanted to come to my concert, but that he was too sick. He sent his personal regards, wishing that I have a great concert and saying that he was sorry that he couldn't be there. They put me up at the very best hotel in Warsaw and treated me like a king.
When I got through playing my concert, people stood and c
heered, and chanted that they hoped that I live a hundred years. Man, that was something! » (Miles Davis with Quincy Troupe, The Autobiography, Simon & Schuster, 1990, p. 357)

WARSAW JAZZ JAMBOREE First breach in Iron Curtain

In Eastern Bloc countries, during the Cold War, Jazz represented a form of harmless “dissent” standed by regime and had a particular diffusion in Poland, also for the less oppression due to the arrival to the power of Edward Gierek in 1970.

Polish Jazz community was very alive. In 1966 began her publications magazine Jazz Forum (also in English and German) very appreciated and widspread abroad, and still today active.

In those years rised also Jamboree International Jazz Festival, which opened the doors to many important western musicians and fans coming from other Eastern countries and also from near Scandinavia.

Every Year Warsaw turned into a perky international community of young people, a real music melting pot.

Many concerts were published on LP by MUZA Polish editions.

In 1977 italian pianist Guido Manusardi with his quartet was there and his performance was published in one LP

with those of two other pianists: the hungarian Gusztav Csik and the japanese Yosuke Yamashita.
