Jazz in Italy - Tribute to Chet Baker at Umbria Jazz 2008

On July 2008 at Umbria Jazz Festival in Perugia (Italy) to remember Chet Baker in 20th anniversary of his death four musicians, that played with him, were reunited in a group, named CHET MOOD QUARTET, to play the music he used to like, well known standards.
The concert is unissued and is taken from a radio broadcast.

A rare album of the Dave Brubeck quartet with the only issue of the second concert in Juan-les-Pins on july 23, 1967. The first one was the day before and was issued as Dave Brubeck - Take Five Live (Jazz Music Yesterday (It) JMY 1001-2) today unavailable.

The program of this second set is more rich, with three takes not present in the first one.

Jazz Live in Europe: Louis Armstrong in Florence (Italy) 1952

On 1952 october Louis Armstrong was in Italy for his third tournée (previous were in 1935 and 1949) with his All Stars and during the tour saturday 25 was in my town, Florence, for an evening radio broadcast "Varietà Internazionale" dedicated to him.

Only after fifty years those rare recordings (10 tracks) were issued in CD, enriched with 2 different radio interviews of 1956 and 1976 and some other old inissued tracks coming from the catalog of Voice of America.

They only appeared on stage one time together for recording: Enrico Rava, the most well-known European trumpeter, and Ran Blake, the American pianist with an influence on numerous contemporary musicians that can hardly be overestimated. Hazelwood Music Production recorded the exceptional concert at the Frankfurt South Train station in 1999. Ten songs, ten standards. The composition, which Enrico Rava contributed ("Certi Angoli"), can also be called a standard in the meantime. In addition, songs such as "I Should Care", "Nature Boy", "There's No You" and even "Tea for Two" were interpreted very originally. All songs radiate a high degree of melancholy without triggering sadness thanks to Rava's unmistakable sound and Blake's just as unique phrasing. The New York Times once wrote: "Only Ran Blake sounds like Ran Blake." Although the pianist born in 1935 studied under piano legends such as Oscar Peterson and took private lessons from Mary Lou Williams, he soon cut loose and developed his own sounds and structures. He has become one of the most authoritative musicians and composers of the "Third Stream" and has a chair for this at the New England Conservatory till today.
The connection to Rava (born 1939) had already existed a long time, including via Jeanne Lee who had worked with both. But Enrico Rava had always felt at home in other styles too: from jazz rock in the 70s to performances and recordings with Cecil Taylor, Gato Barbieri and Archie Shepp. Recently, he has worked with Stefano Bollani, among others, and released music on ECM.

Jazz Live in Europe: Miles Davis "Lost quintet" (1969)

The performances of Miles Davis with the so called Lost quintet [M. D. (tr), Wayne Shorter (ss, ts) Chick Corea (el-p), Dave Holland (bs, el-bs) Jack DeJohnette (drm)] are some of the most interesting of his career. The quintet was so named because they never recorded as five-men lineup in the studio, and only on 2001 with It's About That Time [Live at the Fillmore East mar. 7, 1970]

it was possible to listen to them on an official release.
The blogger Heat Warps posted 3 album botlegs with some performances of the quintet in France (Juan-les-Pins july 1969, Paris Salle Pleyel, nov. 1969 2 sets) that is possible to download here.

Jazz in Europe: Joshua Redman at Marciac Jazz Festival 2009

Few months ago, the last 10 of august, the jazz saxophonist Joshua Redman had an exciting performance at Marciac Jazz Festival (France) with his trio pianoless, that received an enthusiastic consent, as is possible to perceive in this video fragment of the final set Hide & Seek, in which the artist shows his ability on the instrument.
